SYTYCD Canada Hustle Routine

by Editor-In-Chief on October 25, 2010

For several years the Hustle Dancers have been in a feverish anguish over the pathetically incorrect way that Hustle has been portrayed in Network Dance shows (SYTYCD, Dancing With the Stars etc); check this one out from SYTYCD Canada, choreographed by the legendary Ms. Maria Torres. What do you think?

Orders of magnitude better! However, there is the matter of the 35 year old music. I know there is a lot of contention about that but I think we’re going to have a hard time selling Hustle with that kind of music.

I totally agree with you Paul. Now the next step is will Maria be able to push new music?

As of now, I do give great credit to Maria for being able to promote this dance in whatever light. It seems that the Canadians like the dance so maybe with this things can change one step at a time.

Asia, thank you for sharing this video.

Thanks to Paul & Elizabeth for your thoughts. Yes, the old, ancient music that producers/directors keep airing with Hustle is entirely irrelevant to today’s generation of dancers, except as a throwback; and probably second guesses Hustle’s ability to be a broad appealing dance.

Yes, props to Maria. Given her last 2 major attempts at presenting Hustle to the mainstream, she has been the only influencer in the Hustle community so far that has been able to garner exposure for Hustle at the Network TV level of Dance Shows.

Music aside I think the important thing here is that it was choreographed well, danced well given the constraints and judged well by both the audience and the judges. I was a hit and that is what people will remember about this particular routine. Those of us that know Hustle today as well as back in the late 70′s will be the ones to chatter about the details. Routines like this that promote the dance in an excited and well received way will only be a plus no matter what music they are danced to.

Once again, thank you Maria. That was awesome.
