Letters to the Editor
Hi Ron,
I just wanted to share with you that I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer this past Friday, October 23rd. Today I went to see the surgeon and an MRI will be performed prior to deciding whether to have a Lumpectomy followed by radiation or a Mastectomy and/or Double Mastectomy, this of course depends on what they find. Also, cancer does not run in my family at all and today I learned that 80% of women who develop breast cancer have no family history. One in eight women will develop breast cancer. With all my love and since it is Breast Cancer Aware Month, can you please urge all of our women dancers and non dancer friends to get themselves check and save their own lives. Will update my facebook page as things happened.
Please keep me in your prayers and have a dance for me!
Carmen Mendez

I agree with all the comments regarding DWTS’s depiction of what they called Hustle. I was personally offended. Since DWTS is the current standard for all couple dancing in America, when they lampoon a dance like they did Hustle, then our dance is relegated to that of a joke in the Public eye. We are certainly not being properly represented on that show or any movie for that matter. They should have called their skit “Disco” or “Soul Train Line Dancing” but calling it Hustle is an insult to all who Hustle. Honestly DWTS’s representation of WCS and Salsa were not much better. Lacey-Mae Schwimmer, who’s from a great “street dance” family is on that show. She should be the one standing up for the Swing, Salsa and Hustle community and demanding a realistic representation of those dances. I’ve heard that professional ball-roomers often find Hustle one of the hardest dances to master so maybe it’s just too hard for them to develop an acceptable level of proficiency at that dance. So instead they just turn it into a big, goofy joke, complete with Afro Wigs and bell bottom pants. Ballroom’s O.K., when you’re bored, but Hustle, done right, is the dance master’s dance. Nothing DWTS has ever done comes close to the great Hustle dancing I’ve seen in my life.
