Behind the Scenes with Dave Paris & Zoe Klein
Zoe and I entered the competition for “America’s Got Talent” without any expectations and the outside hope that we would get an appearance on national tv. We started the auditions in New York City at Jacob Javits Center. There were thousands of people trying out, and most of the people we met were very friendly. We performed our adagio act in front of the producers and they told us they liked our act, but wanted us to perform to a more popular song. And, we had to choreograph it in 3 days. We chose the song “No Air”, not knowing how the audience or judges would receive it. We had never seen this tv show before, so on the day of the show, we were really freaked out when we found out that thunderous buzzers could interrupt our show. I was pretty nervous before getting on the stage, but Zoe was quite calm. I was worried that if we made one mistake, we would be branded for the rest of our performing lives. I thought this was a lot of pressure and my body was shaking most of the time I was backstage. Zoe just did a lot of handstands.
When we walked on stage, the judges asked us a lot of questions that was edited from TV. It was actually relaxing, because the crowd got to know us. About 10 seconds into the routine, Zoe lifted me and the crowd gave us a standing ovation. The energy only got better from there, as the audience cheered each and every lift we did. The tv showed the crowd’s excitement, but it really didn’t capture how special it was. I’ll never forget it. The next step was the elimination show in Vegas. I wasn’t particularly worried because we were on the promo tv commercial for weeks and I thought there was no way they would send us home. When Zoe pointed out that some of the same people on the commercial were being sent home the first day, then I started to freak out. We were called up to a special interview because the judges couldn’t decide about us. We had to plead our case, and prove that we were worthy enough to pass to the next round. The next round was special in many ways. We performed to the song Halo and created a magical set to match the mood of the song. We also pushed ourselves to do the hardest sequence of lifts that we ever performed, highlighted by the move where I lift up Zoe from her ankles. I had been practicing this for 3 years, and just built the strength and learned the technique to make it work. The problem was that I could only do it once a day, and when I tried to do it during dress rehearsal, I was too tired. This led to another very stressful backstage performing experience, as I had no idea what we would be able to do for the show. Fortunately, it worked, and America loved what we did. Zoe and I have different reflections on our third act, “I’m a believer.” We acknowledge that the semi-final round was not the same entertainment value of the previous shows, but we were hoping for a better reaction from the judges and America. This was disappointing because we put a lot of new material in the piece and thought that the lighthearted nature of the performance would show people a different side of ourselves and that people would like that. Some people did not like it (my mother didn’t), some did, some thought it was okay, but not as good as the other two. Well, we were eliminated and we were upset because we had a great finale planned that would have rocked America, and we felt that our act was better than many of the acts being passed. We were supported by many many people in the dance community and that was one of the best parts of the experience. We really appreciated all the e-mail and comments we got from people who have seen us and know us. A very special shout out goes to Barry Durand and Eddie Simon for going above and beyond. After AGT, we are getting offers for work performing at different events, and are often recognized on the street. That is always fun. I am still teaching during the week, but negotiating less time so Zoe and I can perform more. We do recommend any interested acts to audition for the show, but know that it will be extremely stressful, pressurized, and in the end, worth every second.

Letters to the Editor
Hi Ron,
I just wanted to share with you that I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer this past Friday, October 23rd. Today I went to see the surgeon and an MRI will be performed prior to deciding whether to have a Lumpectomy followed by radiation or a Mastectomy and/or Double Mastectomy, this of course depends on what they find. Also, cancer does not run in my family at all and today I learned that 80% of women who develop breast cancer have no family history. One in eight women will develop breast cancer. With all my love and since it is Breast Cancer Aware Month, can you please urge all of our women dancers and non dancer friends to get themselves check and save their own lives. Will update my facebook page as things happened.
Please keep me in your prayers and have a dance for me!
Carmen Mendez

I agree with all the comments regarding DWTS’s depiction of what they called Hustle. I was personally offended. Since DWTS is the current standard for all couple dancing in America, when they lampoon a dance like they did Hustle, then our dance is relegated to that of a joke in the Public eye. We are certainly not being properly represented on that show or any movie for that matter. They should have called their skit “Disco” or “Soul Train Line Dancing” but calling it Hustle is an insult to all who Hustle. Honestly DWTS’s representation of WCS and Salsa were not much better. Lacey-Mae Schwimmer, who’s from a great “street dance” family is on that show. She should be the one standing up for the Swing, Salsa and Hustle community and demanding a realistic representation of those dances. I’ve heard that professional ball-roomers often find Hustle one of the hardest dances to master so maybe it’s just too hard for them to develop an acceptable level of proficiency at that dance. So instead they just turn it into a big, goofy joke, complete with Afro Wigs and bell bottom pants. Ballroom’s O.K., when you’re bored, but Hustle, done right, is the dance master’s dance. Nothing DWTS has ever done comes close to the great Hustle dancing I’ve seen in my life.

“Growth Of the Hustle” Forum Wrap Up
We had an invigorating discussion on the current state of the hustle at this years ‘World Hustle Dance Championships’. The interaction was great and well received by amateurs, professionals, teachers, DJs etc… that contributed their ideas and suggestions on the future of the hustle. We have compiled the minutes from those two meetings and have categorized them into two groups.
The Short term and the Long term goals.
This week, we are posting the short term bullet points. We welcome your feedback. These are ideas that can be implemented in a short period of time to help achieve measurable results.
Everyone has to help make a difference.
* Dance With a new dancers or beginners every time you go out, for at least 15 minutes
* Dancers are inspired by the music. DJ’s should utilize a mixture of dance songs including contemporary along with the classics.
* Create meet up groups that travel to different socials, clubs etc… to demonstrate the hustle
* Gain information from successful teachers that instruct at schools, colleges and universities. Share the process of getting involved and how to network on a school campus.
* Train the teachers how to teach the hustle
* Provide student discounts and programs for kids to learn the hustle
* Free admissions for students (anyone under 21) to introduce them to the hustle
* Implement free hustle lessons at socials, night clubs, YMCA, Gyms, Church groups etc….

We will be posting the long term ideas in the next couple of weeks.
Stay tuned.

Letters to the Editor
(our goal is to post readers letters twice a month, unfortunately due to space limitations we can not publish them all)
hank you, thank you, thank you. Once again another Birthday at Michael’s. I’d like to thank again all who participated and wished me Happy Birthday. It was the best time. It could not get any better. I’d like to single out a few individuals: Natalie best cake ever, my wife Carole for just putting up with me all these years and the Phillies for WINNING the NL Championship. IT DOES NOT GET ANY BETTER.
André

Hi Ron,
I would like to share what a beautiful day it was in Riverside Park yesterday for the Alzheimer’s NY Memory Walk 2009. I joined Team Eisai with Susan Lazar and Chris Bates and the 168 team members almost reached our Team Goal of $40,000 goal with by raising $38,862 towards research and support for prevention, treatment and an eventual cure of this terrible disease. I would like to thank those who sponsored me and helped me to reach my personal goal. The site is still available at http://mw2009nyc.kintera.org/faf/donorReg/donorPledge.asp?ievent=302442&supid=274446942
Thank you,

Ron,
By now you have probably seen DWTS’s APPALLING Hustle demonstration. It is absolutely outrageous!! It sets any progress made promoting Hustle
to the public back 100 years!! What mockery!!! And why is it that Hustle seems to be the *only* dance on that show that is ever lampooned?
All the other dances get serious treatment. Write ABC folks!
“Illinois” Paul Jones

Hi Ron,Once again T.V. shows a cheesy form of hustle. I did not expect much from a show that is based on ballroom dancing. They do not understand the music or the dance. I heard them refer to hustle as disco. They can’t tell the difference from the dance to the era.Another wasted chance to show the country what a great dance it is.
Bob Frione

Ron,
I watched Dancing with the Stars last night. They had a “hustle” segment. I wish someone would contact them. This is not hustle. It might be “disco” from the late 1970’s. The judges are such “purists” when it comes to ballroom and yet “hacks” when it comes to hustle. No wonder the community doesn’t expand. This is the stereo type we are left with. Perhaps they should have a hustle competition and feature some real dancers.
Kathi

Hey Ron, Dancing With the stars is a farcical. I mean a total joke. The hustle is displayed as a fools dance. It doesn’t even look like the hustle. They imitate all the commercial steps in Saturday night fever and act silly with crazy wigs, and goofy clothing. That is what they call a hustle. A real Joke.

Saturday Night Disco Fever
It’s only one month away. The Disco Party of the Year, hosted by Mickey B, the man bringing Disco Back.
With over 45 years in the entertainment business Mickey B is on a mission. He is ready to re-light the disco inferno. He has done it all, from radio to television and everything in between. He was given the name “Prince of Rock & Roll” because of the numerous contributions he has made over the years. He grew up as the King of the Catskills, MCing at an early age and making a name for himself. For 18 consecutive years he hosted the New Year Eve Gala at the Hyatt Cerromar Beach Hotel. Mickey B. has fond memories of his Catskill days and the dozens of hotels with the non-stop dancing and entertainment. These cherished memories have lit a fire of encouragement for
Mickey B. to launch a new wave of dancing. “It’s time for couple to get close and start dancing cheek to cheek again”. That being said, on November 7th, the “Saturday Night Disco Fever”, will take place. You’ll experience some of the biggest names from the Disco Era performing, witness a head to head dance contest (the winners of the preliminaries) and you’ll dance the night away.
Mickey B’s illustrious career includes recording 10 records with “Tico and the Triumphs”. Super Star Paul Simon was a member of the group. Mickey B. produced and sung many songs released in the USA and France. He has appeared as a guest on many of the top rated television shows. His great love for music has made him a leader in the industry. As the host of several of his own shows on cable TV, he now produces concerts and music festivals. In addition to writing a monthly column for the “50+ LifeStyles” newspaper, he also supports many senior promotions and events. Mickey B. can also be seen and heard on many radio and TV commercials. Every Friday night you can hear Mickey B. doing his thing via his weekly radio show. Just tune in to 1240 AM, from 7-10, for WGBB as he plays all the oldies and takes your requests. Mickey B. loves the sounds of the 70′s and 80′s and is anxious to help re-create the era when kids, of all ages, would touch dance. The planets are in the right places to make all this happen again and Mickey B. is kicking off one heck of a tribute with multiple preliminary dance contests. The top names in hustle dancing are all getting involved too. Lou Del Prete, Mark James, Donna DeSimone, Lori Brizzi,….The winners from the preliminary contests will move on to the finals, on stage, November 7, at “Saturday Night Disco Fever” held at The Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts. The performances will include: Karen Lynn Gorney (Special Appearance), The Trammps, Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes, France Joli, Sweetwater Orchestra and Phil Francavilla. Pass the word, Mickey B. is bringing Disco back.

Letters to the Editor
(our goal is to post readers letters twice a month, unfortunately due to space limitations we can not publish them all)

Hi Ron:
Reading your website brought back many memories from the original disco days of the seventies.
Unfortunately, I cannot remember the disco where I learned how to dance the hustle, maybe you can help me. During 1974 – 1978 the hottest disco around was on Hempstead Turnpike in East Meadow. Would you happen to know the name? It was downstairs in a shopping center. I use to see Joe Namath there. The dancing was great and everyone would dress up. It was a little older than most night clubs.
I would appreciate if you can remember this place and tell me the name. I live in Phoenix, Arizona and have no way to go back physically. .
Thanks,
Robert

I was shocked and saddened to read of the passing of Viola Wills. She is one of my all time favorites, just a fantastic voice. It is a shame she didn’t become a bigger star hear, she really deserved it. I was really pissed when they used Amber and the other two girls to re-do “If You Could Read My Mind” for the movie “54″. Why didn’t they just use the original by Viola, it is a classic, maybe my fav disco song of all time. I think I have all her recordings.
Thanks for passing the news along, I would have never known. I googled her about a year ago and found a fan site with a lot of good info. http://www.violawills.com/

Hey Ron,
I read in your Dancetalk that Franc Reyes has a new movie coming out. What I am trying to figure out or even get a picture of him is?????? Is this the same Perico that use to dance in Manhattan back in 1979, 1980???
I knew a Perico that was a great dancer that would go to the studios and then danced on the Dance Fever tv show. Is this one in the same????
Thank you for all that you do,
Grace Delprato – NYC

(Yes, Perico danced with the Disco Dance Dimensions, wrote multiple number one selling songs ( top of the charts) and now directs and writes Hollywood motion pictures).

Hey Ron, how are you….
Just got back from LA & had a wonderful time at the show. (DWTS) I was able to meet & take pics with everyone after the show. I also had gone to two after parties and got a chance to meet and hang out with some of the celebrities & pros all from the show. My thanks goes out to Karina Smirnoff for being such a nice friend!

A lost Angel
Our entertainment media failed to report the loss of a great singer that achieved number one singles in the UK and songs on the charts, right here in the US. Viola Mae Wilerson passed away this past May. Best known to us as Viola Wills. She was born in Los Angeles, California and was discovered by the late Barry White. A trained artist at the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music, Viola majored in the piano. A gifted singer that loved jazz, R&B, gospel and dance music. She was taken under the wings of Barry White and performed with the ‘Love Unlimited Orchestra’. She then became a back up singer for Joe Cocker. As her popularity grew she would later tour and perform with Smokey Robinson. In 1979 she had a break away hit with “Gonna Get Along Without You Now”. She would go on to release many dance classics making her a true club “Disco Diva”. Some of her hits included “Stormy Weather”, “Up On the Roof” and the classic, “If You Could Read My Mind”. She experienced much greater fame and success in Europe then in her home, the USA. After a long run recording and touring she returned to school to get a degree in music therapy. Her music was up lifting and full of energy. Although she didn’t receive excessive radio air play, she was a favorite of the night club DJs. I’ll always remember dancing at Alexis Dance Studio in NYC to “Up On The Roof”. It didn’t’ get any better then that. Viola Wills passed away on May 6th from Leukemia.

Dance Trivia
* Hustle Dance pioneer Franc. “Perico” Reyes has two new motion pictures in production. Franc. was a member of the Dance Dimension and wrote 3 Top 40 songs. Look for 2012 releases for both his new flicks – “Palladium” and “Tiny Dancer”

* Gene Anthony Ray, played the popular role of Leroy in both the film and television series “Fame”. With no formal dance training he was cast for the part. Prior to his feature role in Fame, he won the ‘Best Male Disco Dancer Award’ at Roseland in 1977. He passed away in 2003 from a stroke.

* During 1978 the home grown show “Soul Alive” took the airwaves on WPIX channel 11 Saturday mornings at 11:00am . The television show starred WWRL radio DJ “Golden Voice” Gerry Bledsoe. This one hour show featured a dance competiton between various clubs in the NY/NJ area.

* In 1972 the Philadelphia band, ” the Trammps” released their first single,” Zing Went the Strings of My Heart”. A true classic that set the Philly mood and lead to other big hits for the group including, “Love Epidemic”, “Where the Happy People Go” and their monster hit, “Disco Inferno”.

* Jean – Marc Genereux along with his partner/wife France Mousseau are a power dance couple from Quebec. Winning top honors in ballroom dancing thru out the world, Jean – Marc is a choreographer for the hit show “So You Think You Can Dance” and a permanent judge on “So You Think You Can Dance Canada”.

* “I Will Survive” was #1 during the 1979 energy crisis, people wanted to dance and take their minds off the tough times. The song won a Grammy for Best Disco Song in 1979. It has been included in over 50 movie & TV soundtracks. In 2000 VH-1 honored Ms. Gaynor with the number one spot during their countdown of the Top 100 Dance Records of All Time. In 2005 Gloria was inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame during a ceremony that took place in NYC. It has been re-recorded over 200 times by various artists such as Gladys Knight, Chantay Moore, Diana Ross….

* He made a name for himself on TV performing on Dancing With The Stars but Corky Ballas was already a ballroom house hold name as he and his wife Shirley dominated the Latin title from 1986 till 1990. A resident of Texas, his son just won his second title on DWTS.

* The late Paul Jabara won an Oscar in 1979 for Best Music, Original Song for “Last Dance” which was performed in the motion picture “Thank God It’s Friday”. He also won a golden Globe for the song and was nominated for a Golden Globe in 1980 for Best Original Song – Motion Picture for: The Main Event (1979)

What a fantastic show all of the Professionals competitors gave us on Saturday night! Thanks to my terrific staff, DJs and to all of the Broadway and TV celebrities who participated in this years Circle of Love ‘Hustle for the Hounds’ to raise money for animal rescue. I am hoping to get to $1,000 so if anyone missed out the charity and still wishes to contribute, we will continue to collect at my party at Club 412. The money will go to a group that I have fostered and volunteered, http://www.louieslegacy.org/

Thank you for all of your terrific feedback and I’m looking forward to making next year’s event even better.
Hi Ron,
Great newsletter. I wanted to let you know that I voted for David and Zoe on Americas Got Talent. My entire family loves the show and the excitement of seeing dancers that we have seen in person. I first saw this charming couple perform at New York Congress. They were unreal, I mean MIND BLOWING. I think they will go on to bigger and better things now. In hindsight after I watched the finals it is a bit disappointing to see the overall winner. In my eyes he shouldn’t have won and I would have placed David and Zoe in the top five.
Thanks Ron,
Jim McGraph

Dear Ron
I am very excited to read that there will be a reunion of the Scintilations dancers. Those were great times. We were regulars every Saturday night. Like clockwork about 4 or 5 of my friends would all go and have the time of our lives. I’m crossing my fingers that Rose, Larry, Karen all come too.
Darla Thomas

Dear Ron Bess,I am not sure I will be attending your “Open Forum” at the World Hustle Championship in October, so I thought I would humbly submit my own proposal to the Hustle community at-large which includes everyone dancing Hustle throughout the world. I propose we establish the “Hustle 2011 Initiative” whose purpose is to double the existing number of Hustle dancers by the end of 2011. People would sign on and become a pivotal part of this initiative by doing what only they can uniquely do to double Hustle in two years i.e. by the end of 2011. People may want to share Hustle with their family and friends, get involved organizationally, donate their time, resources, etc. or create their own participation. The only requirement of the Hustle 2011 Initiative is that people be in communication by including their e-mail address next to their printed name and signature. Each person’s signature represents their stand in making the Hustle 2011 Initiative real. What do you think?
Thank you very much!
Daryl Polansky

Hey Ron,
I have a CD with many of the classic songs from the late 70s and early 80′s. One of my favorite songs is Romeo and Juliet by Alec R Constindos. This was such a great song that everyone in the club would start screaming. As a parent, now pushing 50 years old, I listen to these songs and still can appreciate the symphonic sound that these bands and orchestras utilized. I grew up with the Stones and Beatles too but I was loved the real symphonic disco music the best. I would love to see that type of modern day classic music make a come back. Please, I’m sick of the rap. We need a change.
Later,
John C.

The Forum
The first open forum to discuss the growth of the hustle will be held on October 8th, at the World Hustle Dance Championships. This initiative was the culmination of letters posted on both the HustleLounge web site and DanceTalk. Subsequently, many readers recommended a meeting to share common concerns.

In efforts to energize, encourage and recruit the next generation of dancers we are searching for creative suggestions to help keep the hustle dance thriving. To help facilitate the conference, we have assembled a panel of 8 knowledgeable dancers, teachers and/or promoters. They will be fielding questions from a live audience. We encourage everyone to come out to share their views and constructive suggestions. This proactive forum will be moderated by Asia Bautista (Rhythmlounge.tv) and Ron Bess (DanceTalk). You may forward letters, in advance, to be read at the open forum or simply attend.

This is your forum, where you get to vocalize your thoughts and help influence the direction of the hustle for future dancers. Everyone is invited. We have many dancers that are passionate about the hustle and anxious to accelerate the growth process – to conserve the dance for generations to come. Please come out and join our brainstorming session to support and help preserve our beloved dance. Whether you agree or not, you have the opportunity to share your ideas. For details on the World Hustle Dance Championships go to www.hustledanceworld.com

To submit letters for the forum go to http://rhythmlounge.tv or send them to Rowenlb22@aol.com Next week in DanceTalk, we will take a closer look at the 8 panel members that will be at the Forum.
Stay tuned.
